Full Spectrum Infrared vs. Traditional Sauna: What Is Actually Different?
In a region where sauna is practically a birthright, it is worth knowing why the infrared one feels so different.
Ask anyone in the Copper Country about sauna and you will get an opinion, usually a strongly held one, frequently involving a lake. Finnish sauna culture runs deep here — this is one of the few places in America where "sauna" is a verb and everyone knows how to pronounce it.
So when people book our full spectrum infrared sauna expecting the thing they grew up with, the experience surprises them. It is quieter, cooler, and somehow they still sweat more. Here is why.
The core difference: what gets heated
This is the whole thing, and everything else follows from it.
A traditional sauna heats the air. Rocks on a stove get very hot, the air in the room gets very hot, and your body warms up because it is sitting in hot air. Throw water on the rocks and you add steam, which makes the heat feel more intense and moves it into your skin faster.
An infrared sauna heats you. Infrared emitters produce radiant energy in wavelengths that pass through the air without heating it much, and are absorbed by your body directly. The air in the room stays comparatively mild. Your core temperature rises anyway — because the energy is going into you rather than into the room.
It is the difference between standing in a hot room and standing in the sun on a cold clear day. The air temperature is not the story.
What "full spectrum" adds
Infrared is not one thing. It spans a range of wavelengths, conventionally split into three bands, and a full spectrum unit produces all three rather than only one:
- Near infrared — the shortest wavelengths, absorbed closest to the skin's surface. Associated with skin and surface-tissue effects.
- Mid infrared — absorbed a little deeper. Generally associated with circulation and soft-tissue warming.
- Far infrared — the longest wavelengths, and the ones most single-band consumer units use. This is the band most associated with deep core heating and heavy sweating.
A far-infrared-only cabin does one thing well. A full spectrum unit gives you all three bands in a single session, which is why the experience feels layered — surface warmth and deep warmth at once.

Why the sweat is different
The most common comment we get: "I did not think I would sweat that much at that temperature."
In a traditional sauna a lot of your early sweat is a surface response to very hot air — your body cooling its outside. In an infrared session the heating is coming from within, so your core temperature climbs before your skin feels dramatic. The sweat starts later and, for many people, keeps going harder for longer.
It also means the session is far easier to tolerate. Hot air is uncomfortable to breathe, which is why traditional sauna is usually done in rounds with breaks. Infrared's mild air lets most people sit comfortably for thirty minutes straight without needing to escape.
Which one should you use?
Traditional sauna is better when: you want the ritual, the social element, the steam, and the löyly. You want to alternate with a cold plunge or a lake. You like intense heat and short rounds. You grew up with it and nothing else will do.
Infrared is better when: you find high air temperature genuinely uncomfortable. You want a longer, calmer session. You are using it for recovery after training or heavy work. You want to read, listen to something, or simply sit still for half an hour. You want chromotherapy alongside it.
Honestly? Plenty of our regulars have a traditional sauna at camp and use infrared in town during the week. They are not competing.
Practical notes for a first infrared session
- Hydrate beforehand, not just afterwards. Start drinking a couple of hours ahead.
- Do not expect the first five minutes to impress you. Infrared builds. If you judge it at minute four you will conclude nothing is happening.
- Fifteen or thirty minutes is plenty to start. There is no prize for the longest session.
- Use the shower. A private spa shower with AVEDA products is included with every session, and rinsing off afterwards is part of the experience rather than an afterthought.
- Notice how you sleep that night. It is the single most commonly reported effect and the one people find most convincing.
Health note
Sauna use raises your core temperature and puts real demand on your cardiovascular system. If you are pregnant, have a heart condition, low or unstable blood pressure, or take medication that affects heat tolerance or hydration, talk to your doctor before starting. Sauna is a wellness practice, not a treatment for anything.

A traditional sauna heats the air and delivers intense, fast heat suited to short rounds; an infrared sauna heats your body directly at a much milder air temperature, which makes longer and more comfortable sessions possible. Many people use both for different purposes.
Infrared saunas typically run far cooler than traditional saunas — commonly in the 110–140°F range rather than 160–200°F. Because the infrared energy is absorbed by your body rather than heating the air, you still raise your core temperature and sweat heavily at that lower air temperature.
Full spectrum means the sauna produces near, mid and far infrared wavelengths rather than only one band. Near infrared is absorbed nearest the skin surface, mid infrared a little deeper, and far infrared is most associated with deep core heating and heavy sweating.
Sweating starts faster in a traditional sauna because very hot air triggers a rapid surface cooling response. In an infrared session sweat builds more slowly but often becomes heavier by the end, because your core temperature is being raised directly rather than from the outside in.
